![]() In the fall of her fiftieth year, Alma finds herself lost in a dark mood she can't seem to shake. In depicting their confrontation of the great scourges of their respective eras, Alvarez exposes the conflict between altruism and ambition. This resplendent novel-within-a-novel spins the disparate tales of two remarkable women, both of whom are swept along by machismo. Her strength and courage inspire Alma, who finds herself becoming obsessed with the details of Isabel’s adventures. She agreed- with the stipulation that she would accompany the boys on the proposed two-year voyage. Of greater interest to Alma is Isabel Sendales y Gómez, director of La Casa de Expósitos, who was asked to select twenty-two orphan boys to be the vaccine carriers. To do this, he required live “carriers” of the vaccine. It’s the story of a much earlier medical do-gooder, Spaniard Francisco Xavier Balmis, who in 1803 undertook to vaccinate the populations of Spain’s American colonies against smallpox. The truth is that Alma is seriously sidetracked by a story she has stumbled across. She promises to work hard and follow him a bit later. But Alma begs off joining him: the publisher is breathing down her neck. Her husband, Richard, works for a humanitarian organization dedicated to the health and prosperity of developing countries and wants her help on an extended AIDS assignment in the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, that happens too often with almost every parent.Latina novelist Alma Huebner is suffering from writer’s block and is years past the completion date for yet another of her bestselling family sagas. This doesn’t mean that they don’t have a good relationship it just complicates it. The father probably has to work a lot and doesn’t spend enough time with his son. ![]() When the father dances the son to his bed he clings on to his shirt as a sign for him not to leave him. As soon as the father is home the boy is excited to his father which means he probably doesn’t see him often. “ The he waltzed me off to bed still clinging to your shirt” this line gives us an insight to their relationship. In the poem, he writes about how his father would come home drunk and dance him off to bed. My Papa’s Waltz by Theodore Roethke shows the relationship between a little boy and his father. This poem shows how complex their relationship is and how different they are from each other. Her mother missed her chance to leave a mark but for Alvarez, it’s not too late. “ But I refuse with every mark to be like her anonymous” this quote represents how she wants to be known, unlike her mom who wants to remain anonymous. Her mom erases any trace there is of her while Alvarez writes her name on every surface she can. This poem can be interpreted in many ways but to me, it seems like Alvarez wants to leave a legacy behind unlike her mom. In her poem, she writes about how she would write her name on dusty surfaces but her mom would always come and dust her name off. Īn example of a mother relationship daughter is the poem Dusting by Julia Alvarez. There needs to be a good balance of both to maintain a healthy relationship. A parent that is a little too much of those can drive a child away. When a parent is too strict it can make the child feel trapped and feel like they can’t do anything. Not every child like their parents hovering over them every second. A parent can be too strict and overprotective making them a helicopter parent. Parents can try too hard to relate to their child that it might make them distant. It’s the same way for a father and a son. A mother may try too hard to relate with her daughter because she has gone through similar things. A mother-daughter relationship and a father-son relationship are very difficult. No everyone gets along with their parents. Parent-child relationships are complicated.

Kevin Costner in my opinion is a fine actor, but put him in with an under-rated master such as Robert Duvall, and you can't go wrong. Although the actors had a simple storyline to work with, I felt their performances made the movie all the more realistic. The storyline was simple and easy to follow at the same time as it retold a fine piece of early American history. Sigma advertises both version of this lens as being “dustproof and splashproof,” but if you read further into the technical specs of these lenses, some questions arise. The lens is just better built, and there's little room to argue with that. ![]() In terms of build quality, the Sigma 150-600mm Sport version takes the blue ribbon by a significant margin. These superzooms are performing really well.įor most wildlife photography, I PREFER these light superzooms to those heavy 600s.īut if you're shooting sports photography, then the faster aperture of a 600mm f/4 or a 400mm f/2.8 puts those lenses in a completely different class. I came back with a dozen or more publishable shots that I could never have got with the big heavy “professional” gear.Īnd the image quality? I wish I had a 600mm f/4 here with me right now to show you the difference. This year I went on the same trip with 40 readers of Improve Photography. It took so long to get out my gear and tripod and get set up that I kept getting only photos of footprints where the fox had stood. I missed countless shots that week when I'd pull over and see a fox in the snow that only gave me a few seconds to shoot it before it ran away. That lens has good optics, but is so heavy that it's impossible to shoot without a tripod and gimbal head. They have always been underwhelming until Sigma and Tamron came out with their 150-600mm lenses.įor superzoom lenses, these lenses all perform remarkably well.ģ years ago I went and shot Yellowstone in Winter and used a Nikon 600mm f/4 beast. I think the answer to this question is a resounding “yes!” I have tried many different inexpensive superzooms over the last 5 years that I have been reviewing lenses professionally here on. Some of the reviewers I found said they felt the Sport had an very slight edge in sharpness, and others felt, as I did, that the Contemporary was just barely sharper.Įach copy of a lens performs differently, so to see some slight variation is normal.Īre these lenses sharp enough for professional photography? I was so surprised by my results that even after testing and retesting, I read reviews from a few other reviewers who I respect and it looks like I'm not the only one who has found that these lenses have almost identical sharpness. What I learned from this test is that the price of the lens is NOT a good indicator of the performance of the lens–at least in this case. When I bought these lenses for this review, I was certain that the Sport version would be sharper than the Contemporary given the better build quality, additional FLD element in the lens, and the significantly higher price. ![]() If I had to pick a winner in the sharpness battle, it'd be the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary, which had better contrast at several focal lengths and better resolution at one focal length. So when it comes right down to it, after hours of testing and reviewing many many many photos, the sharpness is almost identical between the two lenses. The reason I'm showing the tests at f/6.3 is that it's the most common focal length you'd shoot this lens at.īut if you stop down to f/7.1 or higher and do the testing, the difference between these lenses is even tighter. That said, the music isn't necessarily ideal for stand-alone listening, due to its fairly heavy and repetitious nature. He captures just the right dynamic and intensity to make gamers know their fate is uncertain and in their hands. Paul Linford did a spectacular job scoring the police pursuit sequences of Need For Speed: Most Wanted. Other than these tracks, the score is pretty homogenous given the limited purpose of the material in context. And, indeed, on this soundtrack release, it almost always does just a minute or two later. These create a great feeling of tension and expectation before calamity explodes. Away from the action tracks, there are brief cues such as "Layin' Low", "Ya Think", and "My, My Missy". It isn't quite as overwhelming as Need For Speed: Undercover, but it's still bound to be a brutal experience for most. The final soundtrack can be overbearing due to the sheer quantity of intense fusions featured. Featured towards the end of the score, "Take That Dawg" has an even more cinematic feel and motivates listeners during an epic chase. "Don't Like It Do Ya" meanwhile takes listeners on a seven minute journey and attains a spectacular dramatic arch. It is impressive how Linford builds up so much rhythmical impetus in such tracks, the latter almost explosively. The amusingly titled "Feels Good Donit" and "This Doesn't Look Good" remain dominated by the interplay of electronic beats and orchestral discords. Much of the rest of the score continues this feel. The final result is therefore absolutely spectacular and fitting in context. The pace never relents and the volume never quietens. The thorough development maintains the intensity with electronic interludes and even more resolute orchestral sections. ![]() Listeners feel the heat of the police chase in the game as soon as the music plays. Linford establishes a compelling pace for the theme using electronic beats and bass licks, before introducing some intense brass and string discords. ![]() "Kick It Up a Notch" provides a solid reflection on the type of music to expect from the game. The result is a series of electro-orchestral scores that were, at the time of the game's release, the most intense and dramatic tracks to be featured in a Need For Speed game. In addition, they hired Hollywood musician Paul Linford to provide some original underscore for the police pursuit sessions. Once again, they included a range of licensed rock, electronic, and hip-hop tracks. Electronic Arts decided to take the music for Need For Speed: Most Wanted in a new direction. ![]() If you add SafeYAML to your project and start seeing any errors about missing keys, or you notice mysterious strings that look like ":foo" (i.e., start with a colon), it's likely you're seeing errors from symbols being saved in YAML format. More specifically, only the following types of objects can be deserialized by default:Īgain, deserialization of symbols can be enabled globally by setting SafeYAML::OPTIONS = true, or in a specific call to YAML.load(, :deserialize_symbols => true). The way that SafeYAML works is by restricting the kinds of objects that can be deserialized via YAML.load. This way, you can use SafeYAML.load to parse YAML that you don't trust, without affecting the rest of an application (if you're developing a library, for example). Require "safe_yaml/load" # instead of require "safe_yaml" What if I don't want to patch YAML?Įxcellent question! You can also get the methods SafeYAML.load and SafeYAML.load_file without touching the YAML module at all like this: You can also set each one individually per call to YAML.load an option explicitly passed to load will take precedence over an option specified globally. ![]() This may be a good choice if you expect to always be dealing with perfectly safe YAML and want your application to fail loudly upon encountering questionable data.Īll of the above options can be set at the global level via SafeYAML::OPTIONS. If the YAML engine encounters any tag other than ones that are automatically trusted by SafeYAML or that you've explicitly whitelisted, it will raise an exception. :raise_on_unknown_tag (default: false): Represents the highest possible level of paranoia. Accepts a hash with string tags for keys and lambdas for values. :custom_initializers: Similar to the :whitelisted_tags option, but allows you to provide your own initializers for specified tags rather than using Syck or Psyck. See the "Whitelisting Trusted Types" section below for more information. When any of the given tags are encountered in a YAML document, the associated data will be parsed by the underlying YAML engine (Syck or Psych) for the version of Ruby you are using. :whitelisted_tags: Accepts an array of YAML tags that designate trusted types, e.g., ones that can be deserialized without worrying about any resulting security vulnerabilities. Symbols receive special treatment in Ruby and are not garbage collected, which means deserializing them indiscriminately may render your site vulnerable to a DOS attack. It is probably best to only enable this option where necessary, e.g. :deserialize_symbols (default: false): Controls whether or not YAML will deserialize symbols. The other options, along with explanations, are as follows. The most important option is the :safe option (default: true), which controls whether or not to deserialize arbitrary objects when parsing a YAML document. ![]() Here are the list of Crunch fitness questions in which you can get more information about Crunch fitness coupons and other deals. These feeding grounds have led to the world's largest albatross breeding colony, on Steeple Jason Island, west of the Falklands. The South Atlantic waters are the roughest, and storms also churn up nutrients to the surface. Off South Africa, a similar situation occurs every June when sardines migrate and are pursued by a caravan of various predators. This in turn attracts other fish to the area that are higher up the food chain, like tuna, and those that are higher still, such as silky sharks. One of them enabled the crew to dive over a mile into the San Diego trench, where the carcass of a 40-ton gray whale had been placed to attract a large variety of scavengers. Filming in the deep ocean required the use of special submersibles. Meanwhile, in Monterey Bay, orca were documented attacking gray whales and killing a calf. Near the coast of Natal in South Africa, the team spent two seasons attempting to film the annual sardine run, a huge congregation of predators such as sharks and dolphins, that assembles to feast on the migrating fish by corralling them into "bait balls". Off Mexico, the behaviour of a flock of frigatebirds guided the cameramen to a group of sailfish and marlin: the fastest inhabitants of the sea. After six weeks, the crew chanced upon a school of spinner dolphins, which in turn led them to a shoal of tuna. The open ocean proved more difficult and over 400 days were spent in often unsuccessful filming trips. The camera team spent three years on standby, using a microlight to land on the water nearby when they finally caught up with the creatures in the Gulf of California. The producers were helped by marine scientists all over the world with state-of-the-art equipment.īlue whales – whose migration routes were previously unknown – were located by air, after some of the animals had been given temporary radio tags. Besides witnessing some animal behaviours for the first time, the crew also observed some that were new to science. The fact that most of the ocean environment remains a mystery presented the production team with many challenges. The series took almost five years to make, involving nearly 200 filming locations.
